Epoxy is a two-part paint that can have a number of general benefits, as well as some very specific ones. Separated, the 2 parts will do nothing. When they mix together they create a chemical reaction, heating up the liquids until they are hard. This is referred to as the curing process. Once fully cured, some epoxies can reach up to 15,000 PSI impact strength! To put that into perspective; the average concrete strength is 2,500-5,000 PSI. It is a very versatile solution to many problems surrounding concrete floors. Click here for an in depth article about what epoxy is to the homeowner.
The substrate can be prepared by mechanical grinding , shot-blasting, or scarifying. This accomplishes 2 things: it allows for the epoxy to properly bond to the substrate, and gets rid of most of the imperfections. Once the substrate has been prepared, we can begin patching any holes, filling joints, and removing any other imperfections before rolling out the epoxy.
Depending on the epoxy floor system you choose, it could take anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours for each layer of paint to cure(dry). There are some epoxies that will allow you to use your floor after its been coated as soon as 1 hour, but for most jobs you will need to wait 12 hours from the time the last section of floor was completed. This can vary greatly, as every project is specially tailored to each individual customer. Our guys will be sure to inform you of when your floor will be available to you, and how to maintain it. We take all the worry out each project by keeping you in the loop from beginning to end.
Obviously, it depends on what problem you are trying to solve or what goal you are trying to achieve to determine the specific pros and cons for your project.
