In an overlay system, the mortar can go as thin as 1/8th inch or as thick as 1/2 inch. At just a 1/4 inch thickness(the industry standard) it provides a 15,000 PSI impact strength! This is a permanent solution. By overlaying the existing concrete with mortar, you are creating a whole other substrate. Imagine how long that kind of floor will last. Probably longer than the building. Overlays are installed for one of two reasons. Either at the beginning of the construction phase for somebody that wants to spend the money on the front end to preserve the floor for 25+ years, or because the concrete is almost at the point of no return.
Epoxy Mortar Overlay
There are a number of colors to choose from when dealing with mortars. There are also a few different mortars that offer different levels of strength and cure times. They can range in strength from 3,000 PSI - 15,000 PSI impact strength. The cure times can range from 1 hour - 12 hours.
Once the mortar floor is laid, we can let it cure and grind any imperfections out, making the new floor as flat as possible. Then we can add a high build epoxy system on top of that to offer the ultimate protection for your floor. This is especially great in basements and garages because we can manipulate the floor to pitch and slope the way we want it to in order to better manage where water will drain towards.
What is Mortar?
Mortar is simply epoxy liquids mixed with sand. It can be hand troweled out or put down with a screed box to ensure the width desired, then power troweled flat. It is self sealing since it is epoxy. It really can look beautiful without any other coatings put on it. Especially the natural look,
The substrate can be prepared by mechanical grinding , shot-blasting, or scarifying. This accomplishes 2 things: it allows for the epoxy to properly bond to the substrate, and gets rid of most of the imperfections. Once the substrate has been prepared, we can begin patching any holes, filling joints, and removing any other imperfections before rolling out the epoxy.
